week 8 respond

The book I read this week is the Anansi Boys. The story is about Charles found out his father is an incarnation of African spider god after his father died. Then he has to fight his “brother” and deal with other African gods. It is kind of surprising for me since I thought the protagonist will fight his brother at the end is the “boss” is actually the tiger god.

  There are lots of entertainment works today about heroes and or people with super power. The Anansi Boys is kind of new since it actually relate to African god instead of other more “popular” gods that may appears in other works. Therefore, I don't really know anything about these African gods. However, the “incarnation” of African spider gods appears in America and live as an normal person who has kids, wife and die because of heart attack when singing to someone in the bar. This is a pretty big reinvent.

  

Week 7 respond

  I read many harry potter books before and also the movies. I paid a lot more attention to the story itself but never notice the education aspect of the book. I read part of the book again and did a bit research online. It is really interesting.

  As probably everyone know, the story of Harry potter is about how a miracle survived boy grow and then defeat the evil wizard. The main characters in the book has positive characteristic such as brave and beliefs. This is good example for kids to learn from. On the other hand, the book described a magic school which can be compared to the school in real life. For example, the Quidditch is kind of like the football game in real life. Not many kids enjoy the school today and the magic school in the book sounds a lot interesting. The author put many challenges for student characters and some of the characters overcome it though different way. This could be make an excellent example for the kids who struggle in school. The book also divides students into different houses which have different traits. Four houses each represent brave, loyal, wise and cunning. Only the house Salazar is kind of on the bad side and most of students in the house do join the bad side. The students in Salazar are probably the most hated people before the true evil show up. This may also help education for school bullies.

week 6 respond

The middle-earth is a really fun topic to talk about. I first watched the movie series about the Lord of the Ring and then the movie series of The Hobbit. The book The Annotated Hobbit is a nice extra knowledge for the story. The main character is hobbit which is really peaceful race. Then, our main character has a really peaceful and happy childhood. Every one in the town is nice to them and the whole town looks a really nice place. Then our main character is different than any others in the down because he has a dream for adventure. Then the wizard notices the potential that he has for a successful mission and chose him to be the one. In the book, the wizard is more like the represent of the goddess since they gain power from the goddess and promoted by them too (Gandalf was killed and then came back as a white wizard). The hobbit is also not liked respected for some people during the adventure because they believe hobbits can not fight. This creates the first challenge for the main character. Then, the character proves his place in the team and respect by doing something others can not. The character will also learn something form the event and grow up. Then, there are more and more challenge during the way like the beasts, the ring and the dragon. Then at the end, the character goes back his old town and enjoy his life. The book really follows the hero journey theory.
