week 14 respond

The set up in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is really interesting since it imaged earth as a giant computer for calculation answers for life, universe and everything else. At 5 minutes before the calculation ends, the “catastrophe” happened and earth is destroyed. The protagonist happened to be the last human being left on the earth that could be rescued. He then meets lot of aliens with funny names like “Ford Perfect”. At the end, one of the aliens try to get the information of calculation out from the protagonist’s brain. Arthur managed to escape after.

One part of the ideas in the story I think interesting is aliens have the same philosophy questions as us. They also eager to know the answer of question such as where they came from and what is the meaning of life. Douglas Adams imaged a universe that lives form try to figure those question by using technology. This might happen in our future and I am also eager to see how the development of Artificial intelligence could help solve the problem like this.

week 13 respond

I always like short story because it always ends quickly which means the story itself has to clear and include enough contents with few words. This means the story also will have a strong and unique style in the book. I read The Distance to the Moon at this week and it is pretty interesting. The book mainly imagined the world while Moon is too closed to earth that people can actually reach the moon by using the ladder. The story is told in first person which our protagonist tell how they reach the moon to get “Milk” which is formed by dead fishes, cells and many kind of different ingredient. Although the story is set up in this kind of background, it also tells a love story between protagonist, captain’s wife and his deaf cousin. Protagonist fall in love with captain’s wife but captain’s wife is more appealed to his deaf cousin due to his talent around the moon. Finally, the wife managed to go to the moon alone with the deaf. However, the moon suddenly starts to move far away from the earth and both the captain’s wife and deaf guy are left on the moon. It is a disaster for the protagonist first, and then he finds an opportunity that he almost possible to reach the moon after. However, once he realizes that there is no chance to win captain’s wife’s heart back, he changes his mind in the air and fall back to earth.

Week 14 in class respond

Many technologies today actually has been imaged by the people long time ago. For example, the submarine were actually mentioned in book Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea: A Tour of the Underwater World in 1869. Therefore, we could imagined the future of media technologies based on the TV series, books and games. Today, we have VR and AR and I already see people start to try to using VR Glasses as a tool for artist. I believed I have seen one experimental equipment online which allow artists to work in virtual 3D space. There is one anime I watched before actually imagined how people can actually "dive" into the virtual world by just put on a helmet. This might what is waiting us in the future.
As an artist making games, the  technologies in future might help to make game much more interactive and also more realistic. The game in future might not only include image and sound, but also smell, taste and feeling. For myself, I feel more comfortable when working at home and the future technology could help with that. I wish I could stay at home but also communicate and work together with my colleagues.
In 10 years, there probably going be a huge change in game industry due to the development of VR. Always keep on track what is happening in industry and also learn something new at any time should be the mission for me from now on.

week 11 respond

The story I read this week is Johnny Mnemonic. It is a typical Cyberpunk story. In the story world, almost everyone is combined with machine or has body modification. The protagonist is a data trafficker whose job is basically save the coded data in his head and transfer to other place physically in order to prevent hacking. The short story is basically a show case of author’s imagination for the word in future. Each character has different modification on themselves. Molly has her finger with blade and the killer has the wire.

The world in the story feels a lot of more chaos than right now. Everyone has the abilities to be physically powerful than others by changing their body part. The world is less secure than today. Every time I read the cyber punk create stress feeling for me.
